Aequra Residential Care

Our Residences

For those who are no longer capable of living independently Aequra offers a variety of care options. Residential aged care is a government-subsidised, 24-hour supported living arrangement for older adults who can no longer live independently at home. Aequra provides secure accommodation, meals, cleaning, and personal or nursing care services at all our residences. Our facilities have been purposefully designed for those requiring ongoing support due to health issues, frailty, or a disability.

We currently operate four aged care residences within the Aequra group. Each of our residences offer a wide range of services and programs that are designed to care for the physical, social and emotional needs of each of our residents. With over forty years of experience behind us we are committed to providing a highly personal level of care. This includes ensuring our residents feel safe, secure and well cared for whilst maintaining their privacy and dignity.

Additionally, we have built a reputation for the provision of ‘culturally and linguistically diverse’ care which is a cornerstone element to our offer. Our holistic approach to care provides residents with choice and assistance for most day-to-day living activities. All Aequra residences have registered nurses on duty 24 hours a day. We understand the importance of maintaining a both a sense of dignity and independence. That’s why we adopt a truly person-centred care approach, encouraging residents to make their own decisions and choices.

Culturally Specific Care

Culturally specific care has always been at the heart of what we do. We understand that language, food, faith and tradition play an essential role in a person’s sense of identity, comfort and belonging. At Aequra, care is tailored to reflect each resident’s cultural background and personal preferences. Through our Neighbourhood Model, we create smaller, familiar living environments where residents can feel a genuine sense of community and connection.

From culturally familiar meals and dietary requirements to multilingual teams who can communicate with ease, every aspect of care is designed to feel natural and reassuring. Our approach is embedded in everyday life — creating environments where residents feel understood, respected and truly at home.

Respite Care

We understand the importance of carers having the opportunity to take a break from time to time. We offer respite to provide the support you need and make the transition as smooth and pain-free as possible. We’ll help you relax and give you comfort in knowing the person you care for is being well looked after.

Wellbeing & Leisure

We offer a wide range of lifestyle and community activities tailored to each resident through person-centred care. These include regular bus trips and outings to local destinations, visits to community centres such as the Men’s Shed, and a variety of special events.

Within our residences, we create meaningful connections through intergenerational programs that bring the community into our homes. Residents can enjoy live entertainment, music therapy, visiting art therapists, pet therapy, and immersive experiences through virtual reality — offering opportunities to explore familiar places, revisit memories, or experience something new.

Our approach is holistic, supporting not only physical wellbeing but also social connection, purpose and enjoyment in everyday life. We also have an active volunteer program and encourage families and community members to remain closely involved.

Allied Health Services

The Aequra Allied Health Team plays an important role in supporting each resident’s overall health, mobility and wellbeing.

Our residents have access to a range of specialists, including geriatricians, psycho-geriatricians, nurse practitioners and other visiting medical professionals.

Our physiotherapist is available Monday to Friday, supported by a daily exercise program focused on strength, mobility and maintaining independence. Additional services include massage therapy as required, along with access to dietitians, speech pathologists and occupational therapists.

This integrated approach ensures residents receive well-rounded, personalised support that adapts to their individual needs.

What is Residential Care

In Australia, residential aged care is often referred to as an ‘aged care home’ or ‘nursing home’. At its heart, it is exactly that — a home. It is a safe and supportive community for older people who can no longer live independently, where they can continue to live with dignity, comfort and care.

Residential aged care brings together accommodation, 24-hour personal support and clinical care, all within one place. This means residents have access to the help they need, while still enjoying a sense of routine, familiarity and belonging in their everyday lives.

Unsure where to start?

Making the decision to explore residential aged care is not easy. For many families, it can feel overwhelming, emotional and at times uncertain — and that’s completely understandable. At Aequra, we’ve been supporting families through this journey for over forty years, and we know the significance of this decision.

If you’re helping a loved one find the right level of care, understanding the aged care assessment process is an important place to begin. It can help clarify eligibility and guide you towards the type of care that may be most appropriate.

Aged Care Assessment (ACAT)

An Aged Care Assessment (ACAT) is usually required before someone can enter residential aged care.

The purpose of this assessment is twofold. Firstly, it determines whether a person is eligible for government-subsidised aged care services. Secondly, it helps identify the appropriate level of care and support required, so services can be tailored to individual needs.

An ACAT is a free assessment arranged through My Aged Care. It involves a health professional reviewing a person’s physical, medical and social needs to ensure they receive the right level of support.

If you, or someone you care for, is considering residential aged care, completing an ACAT is typically the first step in the process.

When residential care may be required

The below scenarios are common factors when deciding if residential care may be suitable:

  • Difficulty living safely at home
  • Reduced mobility
  • Increased risk of falls
  • Memory changes or cognitive decline
  • Higher care or nursing needs
  • Carer fatigue or inability to continue providing care at home
  • Recent hospital admission requiring ongoing support

These are general indicators only and should not be considered a diagnosis. Each person’s situation is unique, and care decisions are best made following a formal assessment and discussion with healthcare professionals.

What care and support looks like day to day

We know that as people grow older the link to culture and self becomes more significant. Aequra puts emphasis on cultural and linguistic diversity. Not only do our residential teams seek to know each resident by name, but also, their individual story. It is this type of care and familiarity that creates meaningful relationships. It also sparks connections that help our residents to embrace their own identity and build their sense of belonging.

Our residences are designed to ensure that each individual feels valued and supported. We aim to create positive connections amongst our residents. Our experience within this sector has taught us the importance of empowering residents through giving them a sense of purpose. We know that when this is achieved people feel better about themselves and have a more optimistic outlook on life.

Standard care versus Higher Everyday Living Fee (HELF)

When choosing residential aged care, it’s helpful to understand the options available. There are two broad types of services: standard residential aged care and additional services supported by a Higher Everyday Living Fee (HELF).

Standard residential aged care includes accommodation, meals, cleaning and clinical care, and is subsidised and regulated by the Australian Government. This ensures that all residents receive essential care and support, including access to 24-hour nursing and assistance with daily living.

HELF services are optional, additional offerings designed to enhance day-to-day living. These may include upgraded dining options, entertainment services such as private streaming, or expanded lifestyle and leisure activities.

Importantly, HELF is not a condition of entry. All residents receive the same standard of clinical care regardless of whether they choose additional services. HELF is entirely optional and always based on individual choice.

The Australian Government’s Department of Health, Disability and Aging provides a useful fact sheet that outlines what HELF is.

Fee calculators and independent verification

The Australian Government provides a ‘my aged care home fee estimator’. This enables you to build your understanding of the different types of fees that apply for residential aged care homes. The estimate provided depends on your personal situation. At Aequra, we always act with honesty and transparency. Receiving objective, independent advice is important when considering residential aged care.
